296. Why Take Breaks

Somebody took the above photo of my husband last spring at our school's farm. When he was lounging in the grass, he had probably recently completed an hour or two of outdoor labor with the kids whose afternoon activity brings our school a significant percentage of its produce. My husband (Hi, CIO!) is very good at working hard, and he's also aces at knowing how and when to take a break.

I'm writing this post ahead of when it goes up, which will happen in the week the 2024-2025 school year kicks off. As Dean of the Senior Class, I know I'll have a fun, exciting, difficult, and busy year. I look forward to witnessing the 2025s' adventures, supporting them after their missteps, and guiding them through the transition between high school and whatever they take on next.

With all of that going on, I'm going to feel overwhelmed sometimes. In my desire to appreciate every member of the class in every one of their special moments, I will want to attend every event and read/watch/see every project. I'm writing this post partly to remind myself that I can't do everything and be everywhere. I will have to take breaks without guilt because the year will be long and I need to make it in good health to the finish line.

Sometimes, in my efforts to support others, I neglect my own needs for space and time and rest. I'm not alone in this habit; many of you do the same, trying to be there for others, sometimes to your own detriment. I'm writing now to remind us to take the breaks we need. Retreating into one's happy place sometimes is not merely allowable, but advisable.

So please recommend your favorite romance novel to me and pick up an extra bag of gummy bears at CVS for me, and watch me enjoy a time out that will recharge my batteries and help me take on the long and challenging year ahead.
