To begin writing this post, I took a screenshot (above) of my Netflix home page. Just seeing it made me think about spending the next few hours relaxing with a movie or a few shows rather than writing this post, but I resisted.
That first icon, of the glorious Carol Kane, opens up my computer's browser to so many options for movies and television shows, all of which the Netflix algorithm practically guarantees I'll like.
Here are some of the times I like turning on a show or movie:
- folding laundry
- cooking
- knitting
- needing a rest, but not quite ready for a nap
I appreciate the notifications I get from Netflix about new seasons of shows I've liked in the past or new movies similar to my favorites. Their system has done a fine job of figuring out what I like. You might find that kind of surveillance creepy; I'm grateful for its efficiency. I like their categories. Sometimes, I'm in the mood for humor, but other times, I need romance. Netflix has that figured out for me. Thank you, Netflix.
I admit that I sometimes lose control, binging a show's new season rather than working on my MFA, grading my students' essays, cleaning my house, walking my dog, or...well, the list of things I should be doing can get quite long. Then, sometimes I tell myself that that's okay. I don't have to be productive every minute of every day.
What do you love about Netflix? Please feel free to explain both what you watch and what you sometimes neglect in order to watch. It's all good.
